Giving Integrity A Voice

Omar Little: A Man Must Have A Code

Omar Little: "A man must have a code"

I know alot of people out there don’t think having integrity is cool, and I get it. More on why it has become this way later, but for now I want to show integrity in a different light. Integrity can be phrased with different words. In recent pop culture they call it a code, but it is really integrity. Anybody ever seen the HBO show THE WIRE? Season 1, Episode 7, titled “A man must have a code.” Read below about the Character “Omar.” When his drug rival breaks the code, Omar starts cooperating with the police to bring him down. Essentially this is a turning point where Omar’s character shifts from a villian, to a vigilante of sorts, and you cant help but start to like him, because he is shown as a man with integrity. You see this alot in series where characters walk a thin line between good and bad. And more often than not the “good” that is depicted in the character is related to integrity, because it is so powerful and dynamic.

Here is the wikipedia page for the character, “Omar Little.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Little

Omar Devone Little is a fictional character on the HBO drama The Wire, portrayed by Michael K. Williams. Omar is a renowned stick-up man who lives by a strict code and never deviates from his rules, foremost of which is that he never robs or menaces people who are not involved in ‘the game‘. Omar, who is gay, has had three partners on the show. Omar is the only major character on the series who claims to make a point of not using profanity.

  1. I think having integrity is cool. Especially when you see someone else’s lack of integrity, it defintely makes them seem as less than. Sometimes people who are over zealous with their integrity is uncool though.

  2. Barbara,
Great perspective, thank you for commenting. I really like your articulation of the two agreements example. I hope to see your future comments as this blog develops!

  3. Having integrity is good if your code by which to act is good. In my opinion, integrity to certain parts of the Islam religion is not good. Islam demands surrender/submit to this holy book called the Koran (American English spelling) which was written by Mohammad, a revered Arab prophet. It is suppose to be the word of God. Well if you do not believe, then it is alright and the duty of a believing Muslim to kill you. Forget having integrity to that. The Christian Bible states..” vengeance is mine thus saith the lord”. Clearly the two books do not agree but it is suppose to be the same God.
As far as the human mind’s development, it is best to have a code that is consistent. A person that has a code that promotes the well being of an individual is more likely to contribute to a long healthy happy life. Every species by way of the food chain is at war. So the first agreement any rational person would make with another individual is agree not to kill that individual (nor eat her/him). The second agreement would be to agree not to waste his/her time (this eliminates lying, stealing, harming, cheating, adultery-business&marriage types, and any other types of fraud). The 1st to break these agreements would be in the wrong. To this moral code I am integrious.
