John Wooden: A Most Integrious Man

As I am watching the John Wooden memorial I am once again reminded and astounded by the impact he had on so many and the integrious way he lived.  I cant imagine seeing another man like him in my lifetime and his death was a sad day for many reasons, but one in particular for me: I had to cross a life goal off my list, the one that read “have a conversation with John Wooden.” In this blog I will give credit to people and examples of integrious living and it is fitting that John Wooden will be the first.

When I think of John Wooden and integrity, a certain quote comes to mind. It speaks to a principle of his that was paramount in coaching: focus on the fundamentals and being the best you can be, not the results. The results will naturally follow.

Focus on character over reputation.  Your reputation may vary.  It’s your character that counts and it’s what you can control.  Wooden said, “If you make the effort to do the best of which you’re capable, trying to improve the situation that exists for you, I think that’s success and I don’t think others can judge that, and I think that’s like character and reputation.  Your reputation is what you are perceived to be, and your character is what you actually are, and I think the character is much more important than what you are perceived to be.”
