Giving Integrity A Voice

What Is Integrity: Dr. Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King was an integrious manDr. Martin Luther King was as integrious a man as our generation has seen. The fact that he stood up for his beliefs in the face of extreme racism, violence, and social pressure, and ultimately gave his life, is a real life example of the definition of integrity. His strength and integrity changed the world, and it is these types of people that are changing the world now. There are many words, virtues and honorable adjectives to describe Dr. King, but none as accurate and complete as integrious. Integrity describes him the best because there are many men who are strong, who are visionaries, who are advocates of peace, who fight for freedom, and equality, but I cannot think of one who did so under more difficult circumstances. This is an important measure of integrity, holding to your beliefs and values when it is the difficult to do so. I would speculate that his most difficult test came when he realized that his chosen path, could cost him his life. At this point, when people are threatening to take your life away because of your beliefs and your choice to share them, most men would compromise their integrity to stay alive. Dr King did not and for that reason he represents the highest degree of personal integrity, and as such we are honored to say “he was integrious.”

In our lives we are tested constantly whether we have the strength and conviction to uphold our integrity or to sacrifice it. These can be small challenges, the daily decisions we make. You can tell these predicaments easily: your belief or value is challenged and you are faced with a choice. You have a path that is perceived to have the least resistance, or the easy way out, and a path that is perceived as more difficult, frightening, or uncomfortable, the hard way. A key distinction here is the fact that you perceive this, and many times the integrious path turns out to be easier anyways. Upholding our integrity to the small daily tests is what the integrious do. This leads to a higher level of awareness, confidence in our ability to respond, and a strength that we can stand up to more difficult opposition  because we have successfully stood up to the smaller ones. This is how we can be prepared so when those life altering moments come our way we can live with true integrity, and say that “we too were integrious.” Next time you are challenged because of your values and beliefs, think of Dr. King, what he went through and maybe you will find it easier to take the integrious path. I certainly will.
